Work permit extension for post-graduate work permit holders

The honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced that foreign nationals, who have expired or expiring post-graduation work permits (“PGWP”), will be able to apply for an open work permit extension effective April 6, 2023. The extension will provide an additional 18 months of work permit.

Who can apply?

International graduates with expired last year or expiring post-graduation work permits (“PGWP”) in 2023 will qualify for the additional or extended work permit to gain additional work experience for up to 18 months.

International graduates with expired PGWPs in 2023 and those with eligibility for the 2022 PGWP facilitative measure are able to apply for an additional 18-month work permit.

Foreign nationals with expired work permits can restore their status, even if their restoration period is over 90 days. Meanwhile, they will receive interim work authorizations during the processing time of new work permit applications.
