Due to the ongoing brutal crackdown by the regime in Iran, the government of Canada has started new measures to help Iranian temporary residents stay in Canada and extend or exchange their temporary status. Since March 1, 2023, these measures help Iranians have easier process extending their temporary status, change their temporary stream, and continue studying, visiting or working by applying from inside Canada. For instance, it helps Iranian visitors stay in Canada and benefit from having an open work permit. Iranian can apply for an extension or exchange their visa for free.
Canadian citizens and permanent residents, who live in Iran, can apply for three types of documents for free:
1) A limited-validity Canadian passport,
2) A Canadian citizenship certificate, and
3) A permanent resident travel document.
The government of Canada is moving forward to protect Iranians and look into changes to other programs, such as Human Right Defender stream, a unique permanent resident program to advance human rights.
